losing my mind one crossbow bolt at a time
Elden Ring, especially Elden Ring's DLC, has so many fun and interesting ways to play the game. This is the worst.

1:57 Without DOOM we wouldn’t have Quake; without Quake we wouldn’t have Source Engine. Without Source Engine, no Valve as we know it-no CS, no Half-Life, no Portal or Left for Dead, and maybe no Steam-, and certainly we’d miss all the community generated content Source modding has given us. But most importantly, an even buggier Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines! But who knows-maybe that means a DIFFERENT third game and a potential future for Troika and tabletop-styled cRPGs. Edit: The only “failed” series of clones in my lifetime has been Souls-likes. Besides Lies of P, no game simultaneously captures that Miyazaki world building and narrative design AND innovates pleasantly on combat mechanics. I’d say Nioh, but those 2 aren’t really souls-likes-to me, they feel like Ninja Gaiden successors with a lil Souls vibe to the levels, I mean the layout and the sense of attrition. I do enjoy Mortal Shell, tho, and I’d love a bigger and badder sequel, maybe hire a veteran writer if possible.

For me, a very important aspect of metroidvania games is the quality of their locks and keys. If your metroidvania is full of literal locks and keys, or it's full of special power-ups that have no use expect to get you past very specific barriers with special markings (i.e. a glorified lock-and-key), then that's just a downright boring game. I think the ideal lock-and-key situation works like this - you're exploring the world, and you come across a very interesting room. You know there's something going on with the room,, but you have no idea what. It's a lock, but you can't even begin to picture what the key would look like for this lock. As you continue to explore, you shouldn't run across this same style of lock too many more times - it kind of ruins the magic of the lock. Maybe you'll see it once or twice more, or maybe this specific kind of lock is only ever seen in one place in the game. Eventually you find the key - the power-up that unlocks it. The key turns out to be a versatile power-up that can actually unlock a number of different styles of locks that you didn't even realize were related, but now that you have the key, it immediately clicks which places you can go to use that key. This key is also just generally useful, aside from unlocking locks - perhaps it helps you navigate the map more easily, or maybe it's a useful combat technique, etc. That's a very difficult ideal to reach, and honestly I'm currently struggling to think of any single power-up that fits that description perfectly, so I'll come up with a hypothetical example. Say you're playing a game where you commonly use a sword as a means of attacking. The game will also have buttons you can slash to open doors. In one particular room you find two buttons that are on timers on opposite ends of the room - it's apparent that you'll need to quickly hit both buttons to be able to proceed, but there's no obvious way to do so. What'll be the eventual power-up that goes with this room? Teleportation? Time slowing? Maybe hallow-knight's horizontal flying ability? There's no other room like this in the game. Eventually you acquire a powerful gun, and soon after the game teaches you that guns can hit buttons. Aaah, now you know how to solve that room. And you know how to solve other rooms too - like that one room that had an enemy standing on a pressure plate, far out of reach across a chasm - you were assuming you'd need some sort of wall-jump to get them, kill them, and let the door open, but no, you can just shoot them. The gun does also give off a bit of a kick, so if you shoot it downward while in mid-air, you can get a little further than normal, letting you reach a couple of places that were just out of reach. As you can imagine, the gun is also very useful for combat too. The gun example isn't perfect - ideally, the locks in the word will feel like they make sense in that world - and it's very rare to have worlds full of button/pressure-plate puzzles everywhere. For a more natural-feeling puzzle, you can think of, say, hollow knight which has a large dead-end room with almost nothing in it. You know something's up, but you don't know what. When you walk on the ground, you'll notice that it's extra noisy and makes a weird particle effect, but who knows what that means. You might find a couple of other smaller places that have a similar style of ground later on. Eventually you acquire a downward smashing ability, and then it clicks - those rooms were trying to tell you that the ground was weak, and you should be able to smash through them with your new ability. And hey, look at that, you can also smash through cracked glass. And it's technically a combat ability too (though I never really used it in combat). This example is also imperfect, but it does feel more natural to the environment. It's ok to also have some more "boring" locks-and-keys, like a simple double-jump ability to get to just-out-of-reach ledges. As long as there's also a lot of interesting locks-and-keys as well. And I think it's these interesting power-ups that really make a metroidvania great.

At a surface level I think the basic gameplay is more enjoyable than SotN, but I think SotN is the overall better experience (but just barely). Bloodstained is too complex for its own good, with systems that I really think would be much better if they were pruned heavily to make them more palatable. Instead, the game is bogged down by these systems, which makes me look at SotN more favorably for its relative simplicity.
